Avatar Maker

Build a cartoon avatar one layer at a time — face shape, hair, eyes, brows, mouth, facial hair, outfit and extras — and change any colour as you go. The picture redraws instantly, and you can take it away as a PNG or a vector SVG. Every part of the drawing is done by your own device; nothing you make is sent anywhere.

Parts

9 layers, 4 palettes

How it works

Three steps, no waiting on a server between them.

Pick the parts

Work down the list on the right: backdrop, outfit, face shape, hair, eyes, brows, mouth, facial hair and extras. Each tap swaps that one layer and leaves the rest alone, so you can settle one decision at a time.

Set the colours

Four palettes of ten colours cover skin, hair, outfit and backdrop. They are independent of the shape choices, so the same character can go from a soft paper backdrop to a hard black one without touching anything else.

Take it with you

Download a PNG at 256, 512 or 1024 pixels square for profile pictures, or the SVG if you want to keep editing the shapes in a vector editor. Both files are produced on your device by your browser.

What is in the box

The maker is built from nine swappable layers plus four colour palettes:

  • 6 backdrops — plain, halo, slice, dots, rays, arch
  • 6 outfits — crew neck, V-neck, hoodie, shirt, turtleneck, tank top
  • 4 face shapes and 10 hairstyles, from a buzz to a top bun
  • 8 eye styles, 5 brows, 7 mouths, 5 kinds of facial hair
  • 7 extras — two pairs of glasses, sunglasses, earrings, headphones and a beanie
  • 4 palettes of 10 colours — skin, hair, outfit, backdrop

Multiplying those choices together (6 × 6 × 4 × 10 × 8 × 5 × 7 × 5 × 7 × 104) gives 141,120,000,000 distinct avatars. You can check the arithmetic against the option lists above — every count comes from the picker on this page.

Every shape is drawn from vector maths written for this site: circles, ellipses and bezier paths. There are no photographs, no stock illustrations and no icon packs behind it, which is why the SVG export stays small and stays editable.

Things people build with it

Profile pictures

A square PNG at 512 or 1024 pixels drops straight into most profile fields. The 256 pixel option is there for places that show a small circle and re-compress whatever you give them.

Consistent team sets

Type each person's name into the name box and you get a repeatable avatar for that name — same text in, same avatar out. It is a quick way to give a whole roster matching art without drawing nine variations by hand.

Placeholder faces

Mockups, slide decks and demo databases need faces that belong to nobody. Generated avatars carry no likeness of a real person and no third-party licence attached to them.

Questions

Do I have to sign in?

No. There is no account step and no email box — the maker loads with the page and works straight away.

Where do my avatars go?

Into your downloads folder, and nowhere else. The drawing, the shuffling and the PNG and SVG export all happen inside your browser tab; the avatar is never uploaded. The site does load Google Analytics, which records that a page was viewed — it does not receive your avatar, your colour choices or the text you type into the name box.

Can I use the avatar commercially?

Yes. What you generate is yours to use, including for business purposes, and no credit line is required. The details are in the terms of use.

What is the difference between the PNG and the SVG?

The PNG is a fixed grid of pixels at the size you picked — best for uploading as a profile picture. The SVG stores the shapes themselves, so it can be scaled to any size without softening, and opened in a vector editor if you want to recolour or move parts by hand.

Does the same name always give the same avatar?

Yes. The name box runs your text through a hash and uses the result to choose every layer and colour, so identical text always produces an identical avatar. Upper and lower case are treated the same. After that you are free to keep tweaking individual parts.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has finished loading, yes. Choosing parts, shuffling and exporting need no further network access, because the whole generator is the JavaScript file the page already downloaded.

Can I upload a photo and turn it into an avatar?

No — that is deliberately not part of this tool. There is no upload field, and no image of yours is ever read. You build the avatar by choosing parts.
